Oriented silicon steel is more limited in composition than non-oriented silicon steel. In order to avoid Y-rings in the Fe-Si phase system, commercial steel today contains about 3.25% Si. Higher silicon varieties may be advantageous based on increased resistivity and lower magnetostriction, precluding the difficulty of cold rolling.
